Tai Chi Chuan — Yang Style 108 movements
Yang style Tai Chi Chuan in 108 movements is structured into three distinct parts: Earth, Man and Sky. Each represents a progressive step in learning and mastering the sequences.
🌍 «Earth» part — The fundamentals
The first part, «Earth», is the one we study first. It lays the essential foundations of movement and posture, promoting anchoring and stability. Rotations are limited to 135°, allowing progressive assimilation of the fundamental principles.
🧍 «Man» Part — Evolution
The second part, «Man», is located between Earth and Sky, symbolizing the evolution of the practitioner. It introduces two sets of kicks as well as more advanced rotations, reaching 180°. This phase marks a transition towards greater fluidity and better coordination of movements.
☁️ «Sky» Part — Mastery
The third and final part, «Ciel,» is the longest, comprising approximately fifty movements. Although it introduces relatively few new postures, these are particularly demanding and require in-depth mastery. The rotations intensify, reaching up to 270°, requiring flexibility, balance and precision.
This gradual progression allows the practitioner to develop their grounding, their mobility and their connection with the internal energy of Tai Chi.
Qi Gong – The 8 Brocade Pieces (Ba Duan Jin)
The 8 Pieces of Brocade, or Ba Duan Jin, form a series of eight movements aimed at softening and revitalizing the entire body. These exercises allow a deep stretching of the acupuncture meridians, thus promoting better circulation of Qi and blood.
Through these movements, the tendons become more flexible, as supple as silk. Regular practice also helps tone the heart, strengthen the lungs, and stimulate the digestive system.
Ba Duan Jin belongs to the category of external Qi Gong (Wei Dan), a practice focused on strengthening the body. It acts as a protective “shield,” helping to guard against external aggressions and maintain overall vitality.
Differences between Tai Chi and Qi Gong
Tai Chi and Qi Gong share the same objective: to soothe and strengthen the body through breathing and postures. These disciplines promote rooting while improving the fluidity of movements as well as blood and energy circulation.
| Appearance | Tai Chi | Qigong |
|---|---|---|
| Objective | Develop balance, coordination and bodily relaxation | Soften, revitalize and strengthen the body |
| Movements | Fluid and connected sequences (108 movements) | Series of 8 precise and repetitive movements |
| Progress | 3 parts: Earth, Man, Sky | Globally practical and accessible |
The benefits are numerous and varied. These disciplines contribute in particular to strengthening the immune system, improving muscle tone and tendon flexibility. Coming from traditional Chinese medicine, these tools also provide general calming of the body and mind.
On a mental level, they play an essential role in stress management and promote better emotional balance. Regularly practicing Tai Chi or Qi Gong improves coordination, concentration and balance, while providing deep relaxation. These disciplines help to preserve mobility and vitality at all ages.
